If
you have a moist basement, then you know you have mold.
If
you see or smell mold,
you have mold!!!
The odor of mold
indicates there are live mold spores floating in the air. These spores
may be breathed in and cause respiratory illnesses and distress. Ozone
helps purify the air by helping to kill the offending organisms such as
mold spores.
High Ozone Shock
Treatments also helps kill mold spores on the surfaces of a home
including the walls
& framing.
Negative
Ion Air Purification Systems will NOT help
kill or remove mold spores.
Ionization
may make the air smell fresher but is not an organism killing bactericide
in the way that ozone
is. Ozone is
the best way truly remove mold odors, retard mold growth, and purify the
air.

| Stachybotrys
Chartarum (Toxic
Black Mold) is a greenish-black fungus found
worldwide. It colonizes particularly well in high-cellulose material, such
as straw, hay, wet leaves, dry wall, carpet, wall paper, fiber-board, ceiling
tiles, and thermal insulation.
The fungus (mold),
before drying, is wet and slightly slimy to touch. There are about 15 species
of Stachybotrys, that can be found world-wide. This toxic
mold grows in areas where the relative humidity
is above 55%. Breathing in even dried mold
of this kind causes many different types of respiratory problems.
Wherever you
live, this mold could be found in your home.
|
 |
Molds reproduce
by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold
spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold
spores land on a damp spot indoors, they begin growing and
multiplying and soon the mold problem is out of control.
Mold needs three things to grow: Moisture,
a nutrient, and a warm environment over 60 degrees.
The nutrient might be wallboard, wood
studs, or even dead dried mold itself.
This is why spraying mold with bleach
is only a temporary solution.
Once the moisture and heat return the
mold can begin growing again.
Ozone can
kill mold on contact, even the loose spores you cannot see, in places you
cannot see.
That's why it can be a much more complete
cure than just using a bleach solution alone.
Mold infects
carpeting, insulation, walls, even the wood and brick framing inside your
home. When they grow uncontrolled, Molds can
gradually destroy the surfaces they are on by rendering them unusable.
Mold infects
these surfaces to such a degree as to make removal of the surface the only
alternative.
Prevent damage to building materials
and furnishings, save money, and avoid potential health risks by controlling
moisture and preventing mold growth.
A sensible mold
redemption plan including
High
Ozone Shock Treatments to help retard mold growth and eliminate mold
odors.
Many types of molds
exist. All molds have the potential to cause
health effects.
Mold and mildew
grow in dark and humid places where there is a lack of oxygen.
Molds produce
allergens that can trigger allergic reactions & asthma attacks in people
allergic to mold. Other molds
are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns
are an important reasons to prevent any existing indoor mold
growth.
If mold
grows out of control for a long period of time, the only solution may be
condemning the property and burning the structure to the ground.
By use of an ozone
remediation plan, mold growth can be controlled in your home.
Removal of all
visible mold,
the disinfection of surfaces, and the reduction of moisture are
the only way to combat a mold problem.
High ozone shock treatments can then
help retard mold growth, and greatly reduce mold odors.
Ozone reduces
the ability for the exposed mold, mildew and fungus
to grow.
Ozone
also helps purify the air and is claimed to help reduce respiratory distress
by it's inherent purification process.
Ozone
acts 3000 times faster than chlorine as a bactericide, and it is the strongest
oxidant commercially available for air & water treatment.
One of the best
features of ozone
is its ability to control odors by helping to kill the offending organisms
of mold and fungus.
Many people believe
once the mold
is dried and removed the danger is over. Dried
mold particles can become airborne and
can be breathed in from your basement through the ventilation system and
from inside walls. Breathing in these very toxic particles can cause irreversible
lung damage and even infect the body and cause death!
High Ozone Shock
Treatments can help kill mold spores and retard their future growth.
If you smell mold
there are most likely live mold spores floating in the air.
Breathing in
moist mold spores can lead to many respiratory difficulties and disease.
Negative Ion Air
Purification Systems will NOT
help kill or remove mold spores. Ozone can be used as an organism killing
air purification device and also in the capacity to disinfect with high
ozone shock treatments.

How
To Use An Air-Zone®
Ozone Generator to kill black mold
Ozone kills mold spores by attacking
them at their source. Ozone
is the second most powerful sterlilant in the world and it has the ability
to destroy bacteria,
viruses
and odors.
Ozone
occurs
quite readily in nature, as a result of lightning strikes that occur
during thunderstorms. The fresh, clean, spring rain smell that we notice
after a storm most often results from natures creation of ozone.
OZONE
IS VERY EFFECTIVE IN KILLING BLACK MOLD by the use of unoccupied room
High
Ozone Shock Treatments. We show proof of this on our Ozone
Studies web page.
Mold
Killing Procedures
The first thing that must be understood
is that mold cannot be killed by air purification levels of ozone.
Mold can ONLY be killed by blasting
large amounts of ozone into rooms unoccupied by people, pets, or plants
by the use of high ozone shock treatments.
How
To Kill Black Mold
Remove as much of the moisture and humidity
in the room as possible. Turn up the heat and make the area as dry as possible.
Use a dehumidifier if one is available.
Ozone
is most effective in dry warm areas.
Once moisture is removed, all visible
mold
and mildew must be removed. Surfaces that can be cleaned with a
solution of bleach and water should be washed. The wearing of protective
clothing, including gloves and a breathing mask is strongly advised. Do
not touch the mold with your bare hands. Remember there is not such thing
as "harmless mold". Any mold can threaten health, so please be very careful
when removing mold.
The amount of ozone
and length of treatments required depends upon the size of the room,
and the level of mold
contamination.
The more ozone that is concentrated
in an area the more mold and bacteria will be killed. It is important to
use as much ozone as possible to shock a room.
Many times a large ozone
generator of at least 2000 milligram per hour ozone generator or
larger is needed for the normal sized room to treat severe mold problems.
If possible an XT-6000 should be used.
The higher the ozone output used the
better the results.
To kill mold and
remove strong odors there needs to be as high an ozone concentration as
possible in the room. Since ozone breaks down within 15 to 30 minutes it
is important to keep producing large amounts of it to keep the ozone concentration
at a sufficient kill level.
Using a smaller
machine twice as long is not the same as using a higher powered machine
since the ozone breaks down so quickly.
With a smaller
machine the ozone level never has a chance to "catch up" to the required
parts per million concentration needed to kill the mold or bacteria.
It is always recommended
to use as large a machine as possible for mold and bacterial problems
Use the timer to have the ozone generator
shut off a couple of hours before you enter the room.
Air the ozone out the room as much
as possible upon returning.
The mold
may be persistent and many shock treatments may be necessary. After a series
of shock treatments the area will then smell fresher, and much of the mold
will have been eliminated.
The ozone generator
should
be set to run highest level and run for a few hours, or for a few hours
at a time for a few days in a row. Sealing off the room ensures that you
will get the highest concentration of ozone that is needed to purify surfaces.
If mold odors
reoccur this indicates there are still mold spores in the air.
Additional high
ozone shock treatments may be necessary to eliminate these odors.
Once again it is important to understand
that this high ozone blasting to kill mold must be done in rooms unoccupied
of any living beings, especially humans and pets.
Will
Ozone Kill Black Mold In Walls?
No, NOTHING
is going to kill mold inside an enclosed wall, no matter what anyone tells
you.
While some companies claim to have
products and special ozone generators that will magically work through
walls, it simply isn't true.
Many of these companies have been sued
by the government for making such ridiculous claims.
If there was a way to kill mold within
walls we would gladly sell such a product since we are asked about this
type of problem every day.
The way that you kill mold inside a
wall is to remove the wallboard and blast behind it with very high
ozone shock treatments. The wallboard must be removed
and the open area must be blasted with ozone, preferably many times.
Just cleaning the area out with bleach
or fungicides is not enough to make sure all of the mold is killed.
You must make sure the mold is 100%
dead or when you rebuild the spores may start to reproduce within the wall
cavity and a few months later. Soon you could have the exact same
mold problem that you started with. We hear about this exact
situation almost every day.
Can
I simply cut a few holes in the wall and blast ozone
into
it to kill black mold behind the wall?
There are studs every 16 inches apart,
as well as cross members behind each wall. To get behind all the
separate cavities one would have to make 8 or more separate holes in the
wall and that STILL not kill all the mold
behind them.
That's why the walls must be removed
if you want to kill the mold behind them.
It does not make
sense to cut 8, 12, or 20 holes in your walls to inject the ozone inside
them.
Besides, the
wallboard itself is most likely infected with the mold inside it's core
so it is going to have to be replaced anyway.
The solution is
to remove the entire wall, clean out any mold and mold infested insulation
and nail up new wallboard. Of course it is strongly recommended that
ozone be used in this mold remediation process.
Some people ask
us if they are going to open up the walls and rebuild anyway why bother
using ozone at all?
The answer to
that is very simple. One must make 100% sure that all the mold is
killed behind a wall before they ever rebuild, or they leave the very real
possibility that the mold will start growing behind the walls in just a
short time once again.

For
treating serious mold problems, which machines are best?
The
Air-Zone®
XT-6000
is the one of the best standard models for strong odor, and mold remediation
for the homeowner.
It can develop
a higher parts per million ozone level in a given space than its smaller
brothers.
That higher level
not only gets the job done faster, and better because of its higher output.
To kill mold and
remove strong odors there needs to be as high an ozone concentration as
possible in the room. Since ozone breaks down within 15 to 30 minutes
it is important to keep producing large amounts of it to keep the ozone
concentration at a sufficient kill level.
Using a smaller
machine twice as long is not the same as using a higher powered machine
since the ozone breaks down so quickly and it can never "catch up" and
produce a high enough parts per million concentration of ozone needed to
kill mold.
With a smaller
machine the ozone level never has a chance to "catch up" to the required
parts per million concentration needed to kill the mold or bacteria.
It is always recommended
to use as large a machine as possible for mold and bacterial problems.

Carpet
Mold
The
number one problem after a flood is that mold is living in your carpet.
If your carpet
was saturated with water it is most likely growing mold. Carpet cleaning
is NOT going to kill the mold, and it is highly recommended that any carpet
that was soaked with water be ripped up and thrown away. If you do not
remove the carpeting the mold will continue to grow in it and get worse
and worse over time. Your carpet has now become a "mold farm" and your
living room is now a giant petrie dish!
Unless you remove the source of the
mold, the carpeting, you will only make a minor dent in the fungi growth
in your home. If the carpeting was only partially wet high
ozone shock treatments may be effective in preventing more mold
growth. Since the carpet is porous you may need to perform these high
ozone treatments again and again over time. Owning your own ozone
generator to perform these ozone treatments when they become necessary
is advised.
You may experience breathing problems
after a flood in which your carpeting was soaked with water. We receive
calls everyday from people with respiratory problems once a flood has taken
place. Replacing carpeting is an expensive proposition, but it is the ONLY
way to ensure you are not still growing mold in the area you are trying
to treat.
Once the carpet has been removed make
sure the floor is dried thoroughly before continuing. Turning up the heat
can help dry the flooring. Use of a dehumidifier ifs highly recommended.
Once the flooring is dry a high
ozone shock treatment can be done for a few hours to kill the mold
spores left behind, and remove the accompanying mold odors.
If you have plywood flooring under the
carpeting it is highly recommended that the flooring be be painted with
two coats of oil based paint. Water based paint will not seal, make sure
it is oil based paint.
Concrete floors it should be washed
with a solution of bleach and water to kill mold that is living it is porous
surface. We have found that painting concrete floors with 2 coats of oil
based paint will help seal whatever residual mold may be left in the concrete,
and preventing it from re-growing in the new carpeting you lay.
This will seal whatever mold is living
in the flooring and keep it from growing up into the new carpeting you
lay down. You MUST create a mold barrier in order to to prevent mold
regrowth, or mold will eventually start growing in your new carpeting all
over again.
We
strongly suggest removal of carpeting that was soaked with water.
Dried
Black Mold Spores
Dried mold spores, especially black
mold spores, can still be allergenic and toxic. it is also advised that
a true HEPA filter be
used in an occupied rooms to collect any remaining airborne spores.

Sick
Building Syndrome
What
is sick building syndrome?
Sick building
syndrome is the result of an indoor air contamination problem sometimes
caused by mold problems.
What
are the symptoms of SBS?
The usual symptoms
include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and fatigue. The symptoms
usually dissipate once occupants have left an infected building.
What
causes SBS?
Some microorganisms
negatively affect the body. To date, research has shown two fungi, Penicillium
and Stachybotrys, have been linked to this syndrome. These fungi
(mold) usually grow and cause air problems
when building materials, such as walls and carpets, become wet. Combined
with a dirty environment, the deadly fungi
grow.
What
can I do to prevent SBS from occurring?
Check your home
to ensure that there are no broken water pipes or roof leaks that could
lead to substantial mold growth. Use a mold test kit to periodically check
your home for serious outbreaks of molds.
Make sure your
home is weather-proofed as much as possible to reduce humidity inside the
house.
Use an ozone
generator for shock treatments on a periodic
basis to combat
and retard the
growth of deadly mold.
